Exercise 1
Once a farmer was returning to his
home after ploughing in his fields. It was biting cold that day. Suddenly he
saw a half dead snake lying on the earth. The farmer was a kind-hearted man. He
took pity on the snake and carried it to his home on a stick. There he placed
it beside the fire. Heat revived the snake, and it began to crawl. At that time
a small child of the farmer was playing in the courtyard of the house. The
snake bit him. The child died. When the farmer saw his dead son, he crushed the
head of the snake with a club. The old have said right that man and snake
cannot be a friend to each other.
Exercise 2
Some children were playing at the
foot of the hill near their village when they saw a strange thing which was
like the grain of wheat in shape but it seemed to be the egg of hen in size.
The children had never seen and heard such a thing before. They began to think
of different ideas to see it. Some thought it to be a poisonous insect and some
thought a bomb. At last they left it and went away.
Exercise 3
It is said that a man felt pain in
his stomach. He went to a Hakim for treatment. The Hakim felt his pulse and
asked “What did you eat at night?” That person replied, “Sir! I ate half of
burnt bread”. The Hakim said to his servant. “Put medicine to his eyes”.
Hearing this the person was surprised and said, “Pain in my belly and you put
the medicine into my eyes, what is this joke”. Hakim said, “Your eyesight is
weak. If your eyesight had been strong, you would not have eaten the burnt
bread. So I shall treat your eyes first”.
Exercise 4
It was summer. The sea abounded in fish. A cool breeze was blowing.
That day was very suitable for catching fish. In the evening, all the young
fisherman of the village with their boats went to the seashore for fishing.
Only three old fishermen were left behind in the village. By chance, it blew a
strong gale at night and there arose a storm in the sea. The fishermen became
hopeless, and they could not bring their boats back to the village. They went
to a nearby harbor in the north to take shelter. All the women of the village
were worried on the next morning. They were gazing at the sea but they could
not see beyond because the clouds of white foam were rising in the sea.
